ASL: Fingerspelling (Lifeprint.com) App Reviews

Very good but could use some tweaks

Very good app. Straightforward and has excellent configurability. Would be perfect with a few improvements: 1) The scoring system is currently a bit pointless, as it resets if anything interrupts, like pulling down the "Today" drawer or clicking the home button. Would be best to either fix this or remove scoring. 2) Needs a landscape mode.

Great App!!

I am loving this app. This is as much fun as many of the games I play but Im learning a skill at the same time! Huge variety of words. Fingerspelling has been one of my biggest challenges to learning ASL but not anymore.

An essential app.

Ive been studying ASL on and off for 6 years, and my worst area has always been fingerspelling and reading letters quickly. Using this app and practicing the words after I answer them has improved my fingerspelling and comprehension significantly in just a few weeks. 20 minutes in the app every day or two is all it takes, and the speed setting and extensive vocabulary make it easy to adjust the app to your skill level. Fingerspelling is such an important skill to have in ASL, and the only way to improve is with regular practice, which makes this app an essential for anyone whos serious about learning the language.

Fantastic for learning to read fingerspelling.

Im an ASL 1 student and for me, reading fingerspelling has been the hardest part. I rarely pick up any words no matter how short they are. This has started getting me used to the essential "shapes" the hands make when spelling words and Im finding Im catching more letters frequently. Hopefully, this app will have continued support in the future! Its too great to not keep up with the new iOS!!! (installed iOS 10 today)

Not worth the money

Its a really good way to build skills and improve real-time finger spelling skills, BUT it is definitely not worth the money. It is a pretty simple design, and although helpful it should definitely be cheaper than it is

Too slow

This app is not worth your money. It is super slow and laggy. You can go on lifeprint (an ASL website) and it gives you lots of helpful features such as a dictionary, a-z, jokes, etc. Also you can search asl fingerspelling practice site and it gives you everything this app gives you. If I could give it zero stars I would.

Great App

Great tool for mastering fingerspelling. But what did they make the B with an almost upright thumb? It is usually bent in and its hard to read at fast speeds. I also keep getting a message saying that this app slows down my iPhone and iPad and needs to be updated. One last thing: then need to make it usable in landscape mode for iPad users. Bottom line: excellent and worth the money

App need updating asap

I love this app--a great tool for practice anywhere/anytime. But, this app needs to be updated in order to work with the upcoming Apple update. Apparently, any app not updated will no longer work. Please, please update so that we can use this.

Yes! Thank you :)

This is literally the best fingerspelling app ever. For any skill level.

Disappointed

Its a really good app I you dont know your abcs but I do. I thought there might be a little more then that..

Not Disapointed

Well i dont know what the other guy in this review is talking about, but if your going to actually USE ASL, you will quickly realize deaf people spell fast haha. Now of course deaf people are aware your learning and will slow down (i love how nice they are :D). But i find this tool very helpful in getting your mind set on fast spelling and giving attention to when spelling is used with ASL. If u get to the highest speed, you start to guess the word after a while, even though the words were going by too fast for you to see. Again ASL is heavily context base when it comes to signs in general. So you will substitute the word in there spelling (unless its a name or place of course, but even then theres a chance you can guess the name by seeing a few letters) I recommend this app to annnnyone learning ASL. Hope this helps you decide :) Takecare and have fun :D

Easy to use. Painless way to learn fingerspelling. Great app!

Okay! ...but

This app is ok. Fun to learn to read finger spelling... But considering its a pay app... I would expect more. For example, a more detailed scoring system or chart to monitor improvement? A way to customize if you want to work on words with certain letters youre having trouble with?

Очень помогает (Very helpful app)

UPD: Dr.Bill, where did the NEXT button gone?! Конечно, желательно видео с переходами букв. Thanks from Russia, Bill. Were playing ASL with me 3 yo son. I am fingerspelling fan, the boy is signing fan. Started on ASL from Signing Time videos which I came across looking for good English language material.

Finally!

Ive been waiting for this to go mobile! Love the web version also. The best thing is the app doesnt use your data. I turned airplane mode on and the app still operates! In ASL as fingerspelling is important this is a valuable tool for anyone learning ASL! Thank you Dr. Bill!

Its about time!

Just what I wanted. Thank you!

Great for improving skills!

Thank you so much for taking your website mobile! I love the variable speed & word length. I know with exposure I can slowly improve my performance. Cannot wait to be able to do all lengths of words at the highest speed! Great performance so far & no data usage. Thanks so much!

Awesome!

As a hard of hearing person, Ive been learning ASL. Dr. Vicars website is great. I can now practice fingerspelling while mobile! If you could make a signing practice app to go with this, that would be incredible! Thanks.

Awesome!

This is well worth 99¢! Simple and clean app is really good for fingerspelling practice. (Im a former student of Vicars and I can tell you he is a great guy dedicated to helping people learn ASL.) Get this app!
